Annapolis Junction, Md. – To reduce and mitigate hexavalent chromium fume generation during welding, Stoody®, an ESAB brand, has launched four non-chromium bearing filler metal options for hardfacing repair and maintenance at FABTECH 2019 in ESAB booth B17087, November 11-14 at McCormick Place in Chicago. Stoody “chrome-free” alloys include the patented 968-G (gas-shielded) in .045-in. and 1/16-in. diameters and 968-O (open arc) 7/64-in. diameter, along with the patent-pending gas shielded wire in .045- and 1/16-in. diameters. New to the Chrome Free product line is the 968-E stick electrode in 3/16-in. diameter.
Current OSHA standards limit hexavalent chromium exposure in the workplace to 5 micrograms or less per cubic meter of air. In closed work environments, such as mining repair, welding operators may need to wear respiratory protection equipment such as PAPRs (powered air-purifying respirators). Shops may also be required to install ventilation systems.
“Stoody chrome-free electrodes provide excellent wear resistance and crack-free performance in situations where hexavalent chromium in welding fumes may be difficult or expensive to reduce by work practice controls,” says David Hamilton, Global Product Manager for Hardfacing, ESAB.
Hamilton explains that hardfacing has traditionally relied on chromium carbides to provide wear resistance at an attractive price. An element such as vanadium could be substituted, but it is cost-prohibitive. Boron is affordable, but early attempts at using boron-produced overlays prone to premature cracking.
“Stoody chrome-free wires required a significant engineering investment to develop a formula that provided a wear resistance and hardness equal to or greater than conventional chromium carbide deposits without cracking,” says Hamilton. “There’s a fine line between wear resistance and brittleness, but we’ve engineered a balance of alloying elements that are priced competitively.”
