Elevate your welding projects with ESAB’s comprehensive range of strip cladding solutions. ESAB offers a full technical solution including power sources, equipment, strips, and fluxes, along with extensive process and metallurgical expertise.
Your Complete Strip Cladding Solution.
Our strip electrodes and matching fluxes cater to the most demanding applications in industries such as chemical, petrochemical, nuclear, pulp, and paper, as well as for repair and maintenance tasks.
ESAB offers the two most productive systems for surfacing large components subjected to corrosion or wear: Submerged Arc (SAW) and Electroslag (ESW) Cladding, both using strip electrodes.
Submerged Arc Welding (SAW).
In this process, the electrode, typically a strip measuring 60 x 0.5 mm or 90 x 0.5 mm, serves as the positive terminal. An electric arc forms between the strip electrode and the workpiece. Flux is used not only to create a molten slag that protects the weld pool from environmental contamination but also to help produce a smooth weld bead surface.
Electroslag Strip Cladding (ESW).
Submerged arc strip cladding has evolved into Electroslag Welding (ESW) strip cladding, designed for higher deposition rates at increased speeds.
ESW strip cladding relies on ohmic resistance heating of a molten, electrically conductive slag. Unlike SAW, no arc forms between the parent material and the strip electrode. Instead, the heat generated by the molten slag melts the surface of the base material, and the edge of the strip electrode becomes submerged in the slag and flux, facilitating the cladding process.
Maximize Efficiency and Durability with ESAB's Strip Cladding Solutions.
Maximise Efficiency.
Why choose ESW over SAW?
Improved Productivity.
Increased deposition rates and minimized dilution.
Cladding requirements can often be met with just one layer, reducing the amount of filler metal used. When two-layer technology is necessary, ESW can efficiently be used to build a second layer. The initial layer, typically a buffer layer, can be deposited using either SAW or ESW.

Cladding Equipment for automation.
ESAB solutions for automated strip cladding include:
Filler Metals.
Strip electrodes and fluxes.
ESAB strip electrodes offer premium performance, enabling stable arc characteristics and excellent mechanical properties. ESAB’s specialised ESW fluxes provide increased speed and fewer cladding layers, resulting in lower operating costs and increased production efficiency.
Electrodes and fluxes are available in both standard and bulk sizes, enabling reduced downtime, increased process stability and efficient handling when used in high-volume
Strip Cladding Heads.
Strip cladding heads for electroslag and submerged arc strip cladding.
ESAB strip cladding heads are designed for heavy-duty cladding operations and offer flexibility, operational reliability and durability. The can be adapted for the specific demands of your applications, accommodating strip widths ranging from 30 to 100mm. Custom heads for internal cladding are available with diameters up to Ø300mm.
The ESAB A6 SAW strip cladding kit combines with the standard A6S Arc Master welding head to provide a cost-effective solution for surfacing high-alloy materials. The kit enables strip cladding with a wider variety of parent materials and consumables
