Annapolis Junction, Md. – ESAB has launched OK Autrod 2504, a ferritic stainless steel solid wire designed for MIG/MAG welding of automotive exhaust systems. Classified as an EN ISO 14343-A electrode, OK Autrod 2504 contains approximately 15 percent austenite, a high carbon content, no molybdenum, 4 percent nickel and 25 percent chromium (Cr) for welding similar metals and matching heat-resistant ferritic-austenite and ferritic steels. The recommended shielding gas is M12 EN ISO 14175.
“OK Autrod 2504 has excellent weldability and should be used when there is a need for good resistance to corrosion and thermal fatigue,” says Per-Åke Björnstedt, Global Product Manager MIG/TIG Stainless Steel & Nickel Alloys, ESAB. “It will retain its mechanical properties in the high temperatures needed for welding exhaust systems where the service temperature can exceed 800ºC and oxidizing and sulfur containing combustion gases are present.”
In the as-welded condition, OK Autrod 2504 weld metal has a typical yield strength of 570 MPa, a tensile strength of 680 MPa and a Charpy V-notch value of 20 J at -20ºC.
“When developing OK Autrod 2504, we worked with a Tier 1 automotive supplier robotically welding exhaust systems that demanded consistent results,” says Björnstedt. “The customer was very satisfied with OK Autrod 2504’s great feedability and its high mechanical strength.”
ESAB’s OK Autrod 2504 comes in 0.8 to 1.6 mm diameters and is available in 250 kg Marathon Pacs and 15 kg spools, as well as 1 m cut lengths for GTAW.
