Un astillero de Luisiana utiliza un pórtico grande y el proceso de soldadura por arco sumergido (SAW) para soldar placas de cubierta de 3/8 pulgadas (0,95 cm) de espesor en una configuración de junta a tope cuadrada. Una cama de sujeción magnética asegura las placas con un espacio uniforme y una barra de respaldo de cobre permite la soldadura de un solo lado.
El vicepresidente de operaciones se puso en contacto con el director de ventas de automatización de soldadura de ESAB porque el astillero tenía problemas con la fiabilidad del sistema de arco en tándem de un competidor con un cable CC 1500A y un cable CA 1200A, ambos con alambres de 5/32 pulgadas (0,39 cm) de diámetro. La llamada se hizo también porque el astillero se enfrentaba a otros problemas de productividad, incluidas distorsiones que hacían necesario enderezar para corregir, volver a trabajar para reparar defectos de soldadura y la necesidad de soldar manualmente los últimos metros de la placa porque, de lo contrario, el exceso de entrada de calor provocaba grietas en la soldadura.
El equipo de automatización de ESAB resolvió los problemas técnicos inmediatos del cliente y puso en funcionamiento el sistema de la competencia sin asistencia. Como resultado de estos esfuerzos, el equipo logró una orden de compra para un sistema tándem ICE™ (Electrodo Frío Integrado) de ESAB que permitió al astillero soldar completamente la costura completa de 40 pies (12 metros). La tecnología ICE™ redujo la distorsión y la repetición de trabajos un 75 % y produjo una calidad de soldadura que superó todas las expectativas.
