Annapolis Junction, Md. – Stoody®, an ESAB brand, has introduced 18 of its most popular hardfacing, build-up and welding wires in NTP (No-Twist-Pack) bulk drums in ESAB booth B17087 at FABTECH 2019, November 11-14, at McCormick Place in Chicago. NTP drums allow the wire to pull straight from the pack without mechanical turntables or wire straighteners thereby reducing the wire drag to promote smoother feeding and better weld consistency, as well as eliminating a potential source of weld discontinuities when a wire spool runs out.
“In high-volume, automated hardfacing applications, NTP drums provide much greater uptime compared to 12-in. diameter wire spools,” says David Hamilton, Global Product Manager for Hardfacing, ESAB. “Bulk drums also increase material handling efficiency, better protect the wire from outside contaminants and offer a better value than wire spools.”
Stoody offers nine different NTP options for .045-in. diameter wires and 21 different options for 1/16-in. diameter wires. Drum weights range from 200 to 450 lbs. depending on the wire. The NTP selection covers Stoody’s most popular wires, including 964 AP-G (an all-position wire for general purpose hardfacing), Stoody CP2000 (designed to produce a high concentration of uniformly distributed small primary chromium carbides in an austenitic matrix), Stoody 101HC (a high chromium-iron based alloy for metal-to-earth applications subject to severe abrasion and moderate impact and heat), Stoody Brilliant (308L, 309L and 416L stainless), as well as nickel and vanadium alloy wires.
Hamilton notes that packaging .045-in. and 1/16-in. hardfacing wires in bulk drums present a challenge, as smaller wires are prone to buckling, twisting, and tangling during payout. As a result, .045-in. wires were previously unavailable, and 1/16-in. wires always required mechanical support to ensure a smooth payout. To address the issue, Stoody installed a coiling machine to open packaging opportunities for small diameter wires.
“Our customers told us that they wanted to automate more hardfacing applications but hesitated because of frequent spool changes. Stoody NTP drums make it worth investing in automation because users can now obtain the desired uptime and productivity,” says Hamilton.
