North Bethesda, Md. – ESAB will present three technical sessions at the upcoming AWS Shipbuilding and Aluminum Conference April 13-15 in New Orleans. ESAB speakers include Dan Colvin speaking on common pitfalls of shipbuilding automation; Boyan Ivanov and Max Lautenbach speaking on increased efficiency and weld quality in European shipyards; and Thomas Pfaller speaking on aluminum weld repair.
Sponsored by the American Welding Society, the Shipbuilding and Aluminum Conference brings the latest welding innovations in a dual focus on shipbuilding and aluminum applications, two vital areas in the welding industry. Attendees will discover emerging technologies transforming the commercial and Navy shipbuilding industry and will learn advancements in aluminum welding, a versatile material that presents distinct challenges.
“Our continued investment in product innovation and application engineering reflects our deep understanding of the unique demands of industries like shipbuilding,” says Flavio Santos, president of North America ESAB. “As proud supporters of AWS’s commitment to education, we believe it is mission-critical to share our knowledge and expertise with the broader welding community. We have developed each of the ESAB sessions for the Shipbuilding and Aluminum Conference with substantive and valuable content to give attendees practical strategies they can apply immediately in their operations.”
Dan Colvin’s presentation examines the most common pitfalls encountered when implementing automation across shipbuilding production workflows, with a specific focus on material flow from part preparation through final assembly. His audience will gain practical insight into identifying operational “stressors” within automated systems and applying proven “stress relievers” that improve efficiency and integration with existing shipyard operations. Colvin, ESAB Vice President of North America Robotics and Digital Solutions, brings three decades of welding and cutting automation expertise expanding across nearly every application imaginable.
Boyan Ivanov and Max Lautenbach will co-present how European shipyards enhance efficiency and welding quality through advanced automation, optimized processes, and harmonized standards. They will highlight technological drivers, workforce upskilling, and measurable gains in productivity and reliability, based on applications implemented by EWM GmbH - the leading welding technology and welding equipment manufacturer in Germany. Ivanov is a certified International Welding Engineer and Head of Robotics and Automation Solutions at EWM GmbH, a recent acquisition of ESAB. He brings years of experience to strategic development, sales leadership, and product management within automation and robotic welding systems. Lautenbach is a certified International Welding Engineer and Head of Application Engineering at EWM GmbH. He is responsible for application-focused R&D equipment, project management, and technical customer support.
Thomas Pfaller’s presentation will provide his expert insight into the demands of repairing aluminum welded structures, including joint preparation, filler selection, heat input management, and distortion mitigation for aluminum repairs. He will also outline code compliant procedures, acceptance criteria, and inspection practices to restore structural integrity to aluminum structures. Pfaller is an applications engineer for AlcoTec Wire, an ESAB brand, serves on the AWS D1G committee and assisted in the revision and editing of the Aluminum Association’s book “Welding Aluminum: Theory and Practice.”
