North Bethesda, Md. – The ESAB Renegade VOLT™ ES 200i Stick/TIG battery-powered welding system has won the prestigious Construction Equipment Top 100 New Products of 2023 Award. Renegade VOLT is the first battery-powered welder that uses interchangeable batteries (specifically DEWALT® FLEXVOLT®), and it also connects to 120V/230V to provide up to 200A of welding power. The only welding system selected for an award, Renegade VOLT provides fleet managers with the fastest, lowest cost deployment possible for field welding applications.
Construction Equipment magazine targets fleet managers, supervisory staff and shop managers in highway, heavy and general construction, has 70,000 subscribers and an online reach exceeding 350,000 viewers. In a letter to Top 100 winners, editor Rod Sutton said, “These awards serve to emphasize innovations, highlighting manufacturers who are investing in research and development. Their investments pay off for equipment users in the form of greater productivity, efficiency, and safety. I should stress that our editors made these selections independently, drawing upon our own experience with equipment technology and the equipment marketplace.”
“It is an honor to be included among the winners of the longest running awards program of its kind in the industry,” says Peter Burchfield, General Manager, Equipment Solutions at ESAB. “Renegade VOLT eliminates many of the costs and hassles associated with engine-driven welding generators for field welding, plus it works just like a regular Stick/TIG welder to maximize utilization” (view video).
Engine drives weigh up to 500 to 2,000 lbs. or more and require a service truck or crane to move them. Because of their size, they may need to be stationed hundreds of feet from the welding location and require heavy and costly cable (a 100-ft. section 4/0 AWG welding cable weighs more than 80 lbs. and can cost $700 or more). Renegade VOLT weighs just 54 lbs. (26 lbs. for the power source and 28 lbs. for the detached battery box with four batteries) so it can be transported in a car or utility vehicle, carried by hand and placed directly at the work location.
“By the time it takes to get crane access, call for a service truck or string cable — a job welders dislike — an operator with a Renegade VOLT can complete a repair and be working on the next job,” says Burchfield.
Powered by four DEWALT® FLEXVOLT® 12 Ah batteries (included along with a four-port fast charger), Renegade VOLT offers a Stick output of 10 – 130A and TIG output of 10 – 150A on battery power. With fully charged 12 Ah batteries and set to an output of 80A, the Renegade VOLT provides the power to weld with up to 33 (E6013) electrodes or TIG weld for up to 45 minutes on a single charge in standard operating conditions. Depleted batteries can be swapped for fresh batteries in seconds so users can continue working without interruption in the field.
Renegade VOLT also connects to 120V/230V primary power and provides a maximum welding output of 200A when connected to 230V, which more than enough for 1/8 and 5/32 electrodes. Additionally, Renegade VOLT has an exclusive AMP + Hybrid Mode that supplements wall power with battery power to mitigate nuisance circuit breaker tripping.
“Renegade VOLT uses a next-generation current control module to create a stable, more controllable weld pool while also minimizing spatter,” adds Burchfield. “It offers identical arc characteristics on battery and wall power, advanced functions such as adjustable Hot Start and Arc Force control and programmable memory, and it will meet or beat the performance of any competitive 200A Stick/Lift TIG welder.”
