North Bethesda, Md. – ESAB today introduced the enhanced Rebel™ EMP 215ic welding system, a 120V-230V, CC/CV welder that now has DC pulsed Lift TIG capabilities. Using a pulsed TIG output can reduce heat input to minimize distortion, reduce the risk of burn-through, adjust the width/depth of the weld bead profile and increase travel speed. ESAB will provide live welding demonstrations with the Rebel 215 in booth W3801 at FABTECH, October 15 – 17, in Orlando, Florida.
“Pulsed DC Lift TIG further enhances the application flexibility of the Rebel 215, giving users more control for welding stainless steel, thin materials, edges and outside corners, joining thin-to-thick sections, filling a hole and assemblies prone to warping,” says Mike Sammons, Global Product Manager, ESAB. “Pulsing also focuses the arc cone, enabling welders to direct the heat precisely where needed. With greater heat control, welders can preserve metallurgical and mechanical properties, especially in alloyed materials such as stainless steel.”
When connected to 230V primary, the Rebel 215 has a pulsed TIG output between 5 - 200 amps, a MIG output of 20 - 220 amps, a Stick output of 30 - 160 amps and a TIG output of 5 - 240 amps. When connected to 120V primary, the unit provides a MIG output of 15 - 130 amps, a Stick output of 5 - 110 amps and a TIG/pulsed TIG output of 5 - 140 amps. Applications include stainless steel fabrication, sheet metal/HVAC, auto repair and restoration, maintenance and repair, mechanical contractors, light construction, farm and ranch and training facilities.
Rebel 215 has basic and advanced operating modes for all processes, including pulsed DC Lift TIG. Through the Rebel’s intuitive operator interface and signature 4.3-in. TFT LDC display, the advanced mode lets users set:
• Peak current (up to 200A) to control penetration.• Background current (1 – 99% of peak current) to lower average heat input.• Peak time (1 – 99% of time spent at peak current level) to control heat input and penetration.• Frequency (0.1 – 500 pulses per second), as higher frequencies (e.g., 100 – 500 PPS) increase penetration and narrow the bead width without increasing total heat input; lower frequencies (e.g., 10 PPS) create a wider bead; very low frequencies (0.5 - 1 PPS) provide a good cadence for adding filler rod.
In the basic mode, simple icons on the machine’s 4.3-in. color display provide guidance on selecting tungsten size and preferred amperage. Operators can adjust amperage as they normally would, but pulsing parameters are fixed at PPS, 50% background current and 50% peak time.
The Rebel 215 also features DC Lift TIG arc starting technology. The tungsten remains electrically cold until the operator initiates current flow, such as with a foot pedal or button on the TIG torch. Lift TIG creates positive arc starts that work well for many applications. Since there is no friction between the tungsten and the workpiece, there is little risk of contaminating the base material. For applications that require high-frequency (non-contact arc starts) or an AC TIG welding output (such as for aluminum), choose the Rebel EMP 205ic AC/DC.
