North Bethesda, Md. – To boost productivity and lower costs in robotic MIG welding applications, ESAB has launched OK Autrod 42 LSW, a copper coated ER70S-9 solid wire with a chemistry engineered to create minimal slag and silica islands on the weld bead. OK Autrod 42 LSW is available in diameters of 0.9, 1.0 and 1.2 mm (0.035, 0.040 and 0.045 in.) and comes in standard spools weights of 18 kg (39 lbs.) or ESAB’s Marathon Pac™ bulk wire system (250 kg/551 lbs.).
“We enhanced the metallurgy of OK Autrod 42 LSW so that slag self-releases or easily brushes off,” says Joe Cacioppo, Director of Global Product Management at ESAB. “Where most slag islands are silicon oxides, the few slag islands produced by OK Autrod 42 LSW are manganese and titanium oxides, which makes clean-up easier before the weldment moves to galvanizing or painting.”
ESAB developed OK Autrod 42 LSW especially for automative, yellow goods and similar single-pass welding applications where paint and corrosion protection are applied after welding (multi-pass applications may be possible as well, subject to strength and design requirements). These applications require manually removing silicon islands, slag and spatter because they could otherwise promote rusting.
“As automotive suppliers look for more ways to reduce labor costs and cycle time, low-slag wires are gaining popularity because they add value by eliminating or greatly reducing the need for post-weld cleaning compared to standard ER70 wires,” says Cacioppo.
OK Autrod 42 LSW provides good wetting action; the weld puddle flows readily to create a smooth transition at the weld toe, a better bead profile and better surface appearance. Spatter generation is minimal. OK Autrod 42 LSW has a minimum tensile strength of 71 KSI and typical impact values of 93 ft.-lbs. -22 oF.
