Annapolis Junction, Md. – For those who need long service life for equipment used in harsh, abrasive environments, Stoody, an ESAB brand, offers a full line of crushed tungsten carbide particles for hardfacing applications. Introducing or “dropping” granular tungsten carbide into the weld puddle delivers a dense matrix cross sections filled with tungsten carbide particles for excellent resistance to extreme abrasive environments. Typical applications include ground-engaging tools, boring stabilizers, undercarriage track pads, recycling shredding hammers and armor plates.
“Adding carbides to the weld puddle can decrease material loss by more than 70% compared to materials without added carbide particles,” says David Hamilton, Stoody Director of Sales. “Stoody hardfacing solutions extend equipment uptime and reduce operating costs, and dropping carbides is the most cost-effective way to add carbides to the weld pool. Our carbide particles are more consistent in size compared and offer a more consistent distribution in the weld pool, enhancing the durability of the deposit.”
Stoody 20-30 Bulk Borium is a loose tungsten carbide particle created from crushing and sizing cast eutectic tungsten carbide with a grain size of 20 x 30 mesh. The Stoody 14-24 Borium CS is created from crushing and sizing recycled sintered/cemented tungsten carbide and has a grain size of 14 x 24 mesh. Both provide coarse abrasion resistance, as well as cutting and gripping action and are available in 50lb (22.7kg) cans. The carbide particles are frequently used with hardfacing wires like the Stoody 964-G for improved wear over martensitic steel, many tool steels, and some conventional chromium carbide alloys; the Stoody 965-G and 965-O for general purpose hardfacing on carbon, low alloy and manganese steels; and the Stoody 966-G for molybdenum-tungsten high speed tool steel for excellent abrasion resistance.
Carbides can be dropped manually, but a more consistent and efficient method is to use the Stoody MIG/Tungsten Carbide System, mechanized vibratory feeder that operates in a semi-automatic or handheld mode.
This year, ESAB’s Stoody brand is celebrating 100 years of business and is the leader and quality standard for hardfacing technology and products. Customers in construction, recycling, mining and other extreme applications depend on the Stoody carbide particles for their hardfacing process.
