To create a weld metal deposit with the same metallurgy as the filler metal, Exaton, an ESAB brand, has introduced Exaton 79S flux, a neutral, very high basic agglomerated flux for electroslag strip cladding. It was designed especially for use with Exaton Ni60 strip, a nickel-based strip used to produce a weld overlay with good corrosion resistance and high-temperature properties for petrochemical, oil and gas applications.
“The formulation of Exaton 79S enables users to complete the cladding process in fewer passes, saving customers approximately one-third of the cost in strip and manpower compared to the other fluxes used with alloy 625-type strips,” says Paolo Torchiana, Global Product Manager, ESAB.
Exaton 79S flux has added niobium content to compensate for element loss during the strip cladding process. This neutral flux guarantees that the metallurgy of the weld metal deposit equals the weld metallurgy of the strip, an important requirement in the marketplace. With Exaton 79S, the niobium, chromium and molybdenum content of the deposited weld metal is not sensitive to welding parameters. As a result, it is suitable for welding at higher travel speeds. The flux also has low viscosity, making is suitable for cladding with nickel alloys due to its good wetting behavior. It also gives excellent slag removal and bead appearance.
Exaton 79S meets EN ISO 14174 standards and is available in 25 kg steel buckets delivering higher moisture protection and decreased risk of packaging damage. There is no need to redry the flux prior to use onsite because the packaging protects the flux from any moisture absorption during transport and storage, unless requested by tough technical specifications.
At ESAB, we exist to shape the future of welding and cutting. We connect fabricators with the widest range of products under our industry-leading brand portfolio with the latest technologies to solve virtually any industry challenge — then we back it up with our knowledge, experience and passion to help them be more productive than ever before.
